5 Tips to Help You Get Over a Divorce

Divorce is tough, whatever the situation. Maybe you still love the other person. Or maybe you are glad to free from them. Or one of the hundred other situations between. Whatever the case, a divorce is more than just a legal step. It is a chance to start afresh and open a new chapter in your life. Here are some tips to help you get over a divorce and find a new direction.

1. Celebrate first

For some, celebrating is natural while for others it is harder. But the key is to celebrate that a part of your life is finished, and a new part is beginning. You can go as wild as you want. Or you might want to do something a little more low key – a meal at a fancy restaurant with a couple of close friends, for example.

2. Have a digital clear out

Whether your divorce is painful or there’s a lot of anger involved, you want to remove those constant reminders from your life to start afresh. That means having a digital clear out. Sure, you can’t cut all contact with your ex if you still have kids or commitments together. But delete those old messages and texts, maybe limit what you see of their profile on Facebook or unfollow them. Take steps to create some space between you and them.

3. Keep a positive mindset

This one is probably more for the people who are sad about their divorce but can apply to anyone. Don’t fall into a negative mindset, especially about relationships. So, one ended, maybe it was on bad terms. Maybe you feel heartbroken. You will find a way to cope with this. And don’t let it make you negative about future relationships. Sure, you might not be ready for a new dating app just yet. But don’t dismiss it out of hand and keep a positive mindset about the future.

4. Start something new

Because you are entering a new part of your life, it is a great time to start something different. Maybe there was a hobby you always wanted to try but didn’t have time. Or there wasn’t enough space in the house for the equipment. Maybe you want to go to the gym more often, take life drawing classes, learn to dance, take up scuba diving. Whatever the case, use the divorce as motivation to start something new.

5. Be yourself

One part of being a couple is that your sense of self is combined with that of another person. And that’s a big part of being a couple. But when that relationship ends, you can be yourself again. That means remembering what it is like to be alone, to manage your own time and motivate yourself to do stuff. You are still you, even though you are now solo. Find old ways to enjoy this or make some new ones.
