Cocktails are great tasting and fun to make. And they can also come in the craziest, funkiest colours thanks to some spirits that you may never have heard of. Here’s a collection of some of the more colourful and interesting cocktails you could ever have at your hen party.
Blue cocktails
There’s nothing that says sun, sea and sand like a blue cocktail. With colours from a rich sapphire blue through to turquoise shades, there are drinks that cover all your favourite blue shades. Many of them get this fantastic colour through something called blue curacao. This is an orange flavoured liqueur that comes in a shocking electric blue colour. It has a nice flavour to it as well and is ideal for cocktails. Here’s a few simple recipes: • Blue Lagoon – 1 oz vodka, ½ oz. blue curacao, top with lemonade • Blue Hawaiian – ½ oz. light rum (Bacardi), ½ oz. blue curacao, 1 oz. Pineapple juice, ½ oz. coconut cream and a cup of ice • Midnight Kiss – 1.5 oz. vodka, ½ oz. blue curacao, 1 tsp lemon juice, top with champagne • Blue Margarita – 2 oz. tequila, 1 oz. blue curacao, 1 oz. triple sec, 1 oz. lime juice, salt and a lime wedge to garnish
Green cocktails
There are a few more options when it comes to green cocktails as there are lots of different drinks that have various green hues. A popular one is Midori – this is a Japanese melon flavoured liqueur that is a bright green colour and tastes delicious. There is also Green Chartreuse, a herbal liqueur that comes with a serious punch. There is also green creme de menthe (mint), apple flavoured schnapps and even absinthe. • Midori Sour – 2 oz. Midori, 4 oz. sweet and sour mix, 2 oz. Sprite or lemon-lime flavoured fizzy drink, ½ oz. fresh lime juice • Grasshopper – 2 oz. green crème de menthe, 2 oz single cream, 2 oz. white crème de cacao (chocolate liqueur), ice cubes • Chartreuse Mule – 3cl Green Chartreuse, 1 cl lemon juice, 10cl ginger beer, ice
Pink cocktails
Most pink cocktails get their colour from the fruit or fruit flavoured liqueurs that are included in the drink as there aren’t a lot of pink spirits. Spirits such as Campari can add a gentle pink blush to a drink. • Strawberry daiquiri – 2 parts white rum, 1-part sugar syrup, 1-part lime juice, 4 parts strawberries (blended into pulp), ice • Pink Margarita – 1 parts tequila, ½ part Campari, ¾ part lemon juice, ¾ part honey, ice • Kir Royale – ½ parts blackcurrant liqueur, 45. Parts champagne Purple cocktails Purple cocktails are similar to pink in that there aren’t many purple coloured spirits. Crème de violette is one that has a very soft purple colour and some fruit liqueurs can also make that pretty shade. • Aviation – 2 ¼ parts gin, ¾ parts Maraschino liqueur, ¾ parts lemon juice • Blueberry Ginger Bellini – 1.5 cups blueberries (muddled), 1 tbsp grated ginger, 1 tbsp sugar ½ cup lemon juice, 1 cup cranberry juice, ½ cup champagne
